THE IMPORTANCE OF A VISUAL DIARY

Updated: Oct 31, 2022

What is a visual diary?

A visual diary is a collection of references compiled by an artist to help develop a concept using notes, sketches, images, and videos.

The purpose of a vial diary is to help the photographer with the direction of the photo shoot in terms of lighting technique, locations, look and feel, time of day, props that can be included, and the styling of the set.

A visual diary boosts inspiration in creating quality images; it allows consolidation of thoughts and even improves creativity, as it is a placeholder for ideas and references. It helps determine the technical aspect of the shoot, for instance, making the subject freeze which means you need to have an idea of how you set your camera settings and note everything on your visual diary, even with how the prop should be styled. Maybe you want to create special lens effects like distortion using a fisheye lens if the tripod is needed.

It also helps by indicating what will you do in post-production, like basic editing for the final image.

Conclusion

A visual diary is a tool that helps an artist to build a concept with a collection of reference images, drawings, sketches, videos, and music. It is a tool that professional photographers use to create high-quality work, and it also makes you, as a photographer, stand out.
